5 Web Design Mistakes - Simple But Often Overlooked
Here are some common mistakes made by web designers that needs to be fixed.
Slow Loading Web Pages
People do have faster internet connections nowadays as compared to the past but one thing that they cannot tolerate, neither now nor then, is slow download speeds. One of the prime reasons people leave a website is because the web pages take too much time to get loaded. Often websites have slow loading Flash movies as a welcome element to the website. This highly adds to the weight of the website and makes it load slowly. Even if you have a progress bar that shows the loading status of the website, remember that most people would not wait through the whole process. So, make sure you provide them with an alternative to skip the Flash and get to the website directly.
Information Overload
Content is the king... but too much of anything is bad. And same is the case with content as well. Even though one of the prime considerations should be to provide your visitors with relevant information, an overdose of the same would have negative implications. Also, take care not to ask your visitors for too much information. If you need to collect information, ask for only what you actually need otherwise you run the risk of overwhelming your visitors with questions. Also, remember that people would not be very comfortable revealing their personal or financial information like age, salary etc. So make sure you build a level of trust and establish credibility before expecting your audiences to divulge any information.
Un-Intuitive Navigation
The navigation structure of the website is what decides the browsing course of the visitors. And unless you have a smooth and intuitive navigation, you cannot expect your visitors to have a fulfilling user experience. Poor navigation on websites require visitors to click through a lot of links and pages to get to what they really want to see. And the worse happens when they don't find relevant information inspite of all the traveling. Focus on providing an intuitive navigation system to your users. They shouldn't even have to think about where to go next and how. Everything should come very naturally to their finger tips.
Poorly Organized Information
Not putting information where people expect to find it is one of the most serious mistakes you can make on your website. Nothing annoys visitors than having a difficult time finding information or worse not finding it at all. There are certain things that they naturally expect to find on any website and if you don't have it, it'll be a toss for your credibility. Some of the common things that are a norm are Privacy Policy, Contact Us page, Search Box and so on.
All Flash and No Content
Even though Flash content is indexed by the search engine crawlers effectively now, there is always a higher consideration for good content. Therefore, even though you may have great Flash elements on your website, unless you have quality content you cannot expect to be a success on the web.
